What Kind of Chandelier Should I Choose?

When you think of a chandelier, you probably have an image of a grand banquet hall with a million sparkling lights providing gentle, elegant light.  This is a beautiful image, but in recent years, chandeliers have become more popular amongst home owners as lighting for their homes. A chandelier is a great choice as a centre piece, or focal point that generates and stimulates conversation. But how do you choose a chandelier that is not too much for your space? And are all chandeliers the glittery visions that we see in our imaginations?

There are three broad factors that influence which kind of chandelier would work best in your home. Firstly, what is the overall look of your home? Is it antique, modern, stylized, or simple? Chandeliers come in a variety of styles, from antler chandeliers to more proto-Christian and wrought iron chandelier options. You need to apply your personal sense of style to determine the one that is best for your space.

The next factor is whether you want natural light or candle light. Candles are perfect for romantic, small settings, as they provide soft light, but if you have more serious lighting needs then this may not be your best option. You can get chandeliers with bulbs that mimic candles, and if you are passionate about the look of candle chandeliers then this might be a good compromise for you.

The final consideration is the size of the area that you are going to be lighting. A chandelier casts light in a circular space, and if you are using it in a very large area, you need enough lights to do the job successfully. Similarly, even a medium-sized chandelier can be overpowering in a small space. You need to make your selection accordingly.

Is It Difficult To Install A Programmable Thermostat?

Absolutely not! The wires on any thermostat are color coded and correspond to a letter on the back of the thermostat panel. (B=Blue, R=Red, etc.) You’ll want to make sure you shut off power to the furnace (which shuts off power to the thermostat as well) though, as thermostat wires are generally very fine wires that can short out easily. So, turning off the power may save you a little bit of hassle. Remove the old thermostat panel and connect the old wires to the new panel as the color coding recommends. Turn the power back on and follow the instructions to program your new piece!

It’s easy!

How To Remove A Broken Light Bulb From The Socket?

The old wives tale is we’ve always heard is that the easiest way to remove a broken light bulb from the socket of an antler table lamp—or any other lamp for that matter–is using a potato. Is this true? We asked our Electrician, who had heard the same tale before—but it is certainly NOT the way he would recommend. Before you even begin, he warns again—MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF! (We feel like we’re repeating ourselves a lot of the time with that one—but it bears repeating!) Anyway, usually when a bulb breaks it means that something has corroded inside of the socket, causing it to stick. So rather than a potato, grab a pair of needle nosed pliers and grasp the shell of the socket and twist. You’ll get much better traction with these then your garden variety alternative!

Is Replacing An Exterior Light A DIY Project?

If the matter is simply REPLACING an already existing light—then absolutely! As with all electrical repairs, you’ll want to make sure the switch is off and the power is off before you begin. Our on staff Electrician recommended that every handy homeowner invest in a pen tester. This way, the homeowner never has to go near what they think may be a live wire without checking it first. After the power is off though, you simply remove the outdoor wall sconce and replace it with the new one! Not only is this a DIY project—it’s a DIY project that’s complete in under an hour!

How to Make Your Dining Room Stand Out With a Chandelier

As people return to the basic principles of home design, the dining room is slowly gaining its former place as the centre of a home. In a time where families eat in front of the television, a dining room is a special space where friends and family can gather and share a meal. While getting the basics of this room is quite easy – you select furniture and a color scheme – lighting can be a problem as dining rooms are normally fairly large. If you really want to create a special dining room, invest in a chandelier.

Chandeliers are far more diverse than you think. Yes, there are traditional tiered designs with many lights seemingly floating in space, but there are other styles and design tastes represented in modern chandelier designs. If you are thinking about adding a chandelier to your dining room you need to know what is on offer.

There are gothic, romantic designs in wrought iron that ideal if you have an elegant, natural feel in the room. These are often lit with candles, which again add to the romance of the entire installation. If you want something more masculine, an antler chandelier is a perfect addition for a traditional home, as it works well with wood and stone. And yes, if you have set your hopes on a traditional, glittery chandelier, then these are readily available.

Your dining room can only benefit from the addition of a beautiful wrought iron chandelier. Make sure that there is enough light to set the mood, match your chandelier to your current theme, and get an expert to install the piece as many chandeliers are heavy and need structural support. Your dining room can easily become the warm centre of your home overnight.

A Quick Tip On How to Light a Hallway

Many home owners are unsure how to properly light their entrance halls and home passageways. Hall lighting is both practical – it makes it easier to find your way in the dark, and an effective design tool. So how do you light a hallway to maximize the space and create the kind of impact that you would like to? The secret comes in the kind of lighting that you choose.

The first option that you have is longer lighting, usually in the form of standard lights, fluorescent lights, or constant lighting. Normal lights work fine except that the area lit is often small, so you would have to place a fair number of lights to illuminate a whole passage way. Fluorescent bulbs work well as they are longer but they light the area in a clinical way, which is often too harsh. And you can choose ambient lighting along the skirting boards, which creates a beautiful effect but does not provide enough light see by.

The best way to light your way in a hall is with one large-scale light, such as an iron chandelier, or with wall sconces. Chandeliers are dramatic and work particularly well for entrance halls as they create ample amounts of light and really set the tone of a home. Your other option is wall sconces. These are great because they are stylish and effective. A series of wall sconces provides enough light to see by, and you can select the amount of light you want in a passage. For example, if your children live at the end of a hall, you can switch those lights off at night. And if you have guests you can light the way for them to see where they are going. Sconces or chandeliers provide a classy, elegant solution.

Is Wiring For Surround Sound A DIY Job?

Technically, it can be, but it goes much easier and faster with another person to help. If you’re adding surround sound to an existing room, you’ll need to have access to the room above or below—usually an attic or basement. You want to lay out all the wire that you need and drill hole into the carpet from above so you can see where the wires need to go. Once you have done this, use fish tape to get the wire through the wall to the area where it needs to be above (here is where the second person comes in handy.) Speakers are usually made to mount in the wall, so you’ll need to cut into the drywall to mount the speakers inside. Connect the wires first, mount the speakers, and then run the wires back to the component you are connecting. You can also use this same technique if going to mount stereo speakers around your 72 inch bathroom vanity for music in the bathroom.

Be Careful When Fitting Lights!

I had always loved the effect that a large wrought iron chandelier brings to a room. A dining room with glassy lighting above it is like a scene from a movie, and with all of the varieties of lighting out there, I thought it would be easy to find exactly what I was looking for.  As I have an art deco dining room I decided to go for a fairly large three tiered chandelier, which was supported by three chains.

Once I had my product I was excited to get it set up. I have some basic electronic knowledge, and rigging the system up so that it worked was fairly simple. The problem came in with the actual mounting of the chandelier itself. The idea was to fit the support chains through a simple bracket that was centrally mounted into the ceiling above the chandelier. However, I did not have the correct tools for the job – the ceiling was quite fragile (being plaster) and I probably shouldn’t have carried on with the job, but I chose to anyway, as I was excited.

To celebrate my new purchase I had some friends over for a dinner. Everything was going well, and the lighting added a new atmosphere to the room. But just before dessert, I heard a sickening creak, and in an instant the chandelier has come crashing down onto my dining room table. Thankfully none of my friends were hurt, but the table, crockery and glasses were all smashed, and the ceiling was nothing more than a gaping hole.

There are a few valuable lessons to be learnt from this. Firstly, make sure you know what material your ceiling is made from, and if it can handle the weight. And always contact a professional to mount lights.
